Founded in 1998, Smile & Nod is Cal Poly SLO's one and only improvised comedy team! We perform both Short and Long Form improv comedy for the San Luis Obispo community. Our team consists of 19 skilled improvisors who you are guaranteed to love! We have live shows every Saturday night in Philips Hall on Cal Poly campus. Hope to see you there!
So what's improv?
We make it all up on the spot!
No script, no expectations, no fear!
Smile and Nod will make you laugh!SHORT FORM: Short Form is the style performed by Comedy Sportz and Whose Line is it Anyway? The quick and exciting action focuses on delivering the funny, and the head-to-head battle between Team Smile and Team Nod adds a competitive edge.LONG FORM: Long Form doesn't use games like Short Form, so it forces the players to create sets of scenes from nothing but audience suggestions. This is the style favored by professional improvisers like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and features longer scenes that leave more room for creativity. We do both!
Meet Our Team
We hold auditions for prospective members the first Friday of every quarter! All improv skill levels, and experience are welcome (including no experience at all!). We will teach you everything you need to know before the audition! Keep in mind that many of our current members auditioned multiple times before getting on team, so if you do not make it right away, keep trying! We want to see you coming back.** When: Friday, TBD Phillips Hall**There's time in the beginning for mingling, and then we move on to some warm-ups. The warm-ups are supposed to be fun, so participate as much as you can and get yourself in the improv mood. The audition process will begin with games such as Pan Left Pan Right, where improvisers take turns performing in two-person scenes. At any point, the referee can blow the whistle and make the improvisers “pan left” or “pan right” so see a different scene, and will go back to see those same scenes and how they progress. Usually, there is only time for two games, but sometimes we add a third!CallbacksWhen: Saturday, TBD (INVITE ONLY)The current team selects auditioners that they would like to see more of from the night before. The auditions again begin with some time for mingling and warm-ups, but the difference from the night before is that callbacks focus on Long Form.We will start with a few short exercises, then moving on to long form scenes with a mix of team members and auditions. Everything will be explained at the callback, so if you've never done Long Form before, don't worry!
